The day begins with a cup of hot steaming Nescafe and goes fast forward with cooking and packing lunch boxes, hurriedly rushing to the bus stop to catch the express bus and then the train and city bus to downtown taking 3 hours to reach the office which is about 40 miles from “Home”. I don’t have to mention again the return journey after a long, long day at work. Whew! It is tiresome for my tiny body. But I am more than happy to be working blissfully than staying at home doing nothing.
The day ends with a phone call to my kith and kin and playing Chowka Baara (Chauka Baara?) to unwind. Yes you read it right. It feels so good to play it in a far, far corner of the globe after so many years, where people do not understand the language I speak. I am getting nostalgic all the way.
I was introduced to this traditional game when I was very young. We (Me and my cousins) used to play this game quite often with kavades, killing each other’s kayis with our Tollus and Gattis and praying that we make our kayi as hannu soon . We also played Pagade (Ombattara aata, Hattara aata, Hoolu pagade), Carrom, Kunte Bille, Alguli mane with hunse beeja, Lagori, Choor Chandu, Jootata and not to forget Kanna Mucchhe (we used to call it “Ice pice” instead of “I spy”). I still remember the short lines we sang before we went to search.
“Kanna Mucchhe, Kaade Goode Uddina Moote Urule hoytu Nammaya hakki Nimmaya hakki Bitteno Bitte”
Well, there are lot more things to add. Those were fun times!!!!
Times without Internet
Times without Cellphones and Emails
Times without Xbox, Wii or Ipods
Times without competition overkill
Times without cable TV
Times without traffic jams
Times without IT Companies
Times that will never return
Two=One. Mathematical Fallacy?

Have you ever proved that 2 =1? Here is the proof: -
a = b (Assumption)
a2 = ab (On multiplying both sides with a)
a2 – b2 = ab – b2 (On adding -b2 on both sides)
(a + b) (a – b) = b (a – b)
(a + b) (a – b) = b (a – b)
a + b = b
But (a = b), as per assumption.
So, 2b = b. In other words,
2 = 1.

September 2003: My first trip abroad – UK
I am totally excited. I want a window seat in the plane. I attentively listen to everything the air hostess says. I am a bit nervous too about the white skinned people sitting next to me. I am awed at the huge Schiphol airport in Amsterdam during the transit. I feel like a queen travelling in a Mercedes Taxi in UK. I am dumbstruck at the huge malls and the buildings in London. I am mesmerized by the night lights near Oxford Circus. I dance in joy playing in my first snowfall. I am so energized at the very thought of going on a trip. I go shopping for clothes, shoes, Jackets and what not. I pack my bags 2 days in advance. I am gleefully capturing the beauty of Scotland, Wales and Lake District. I am blithely clicking away 1000s of snaps on my newly bought 2MP digicam. Snaps with Jacket, snaps without jacket, snaps with friends, single snaps, snaps with nature and snaps of nature. You name it. You have it. All I did was clicking away to glory.
December 2007: My trip to the US
Me: Yippee, I am travelling to the land of opportunities. America, here I come.
My alter ego: So what? No big deal. What’s the fuss about?
Me: Hey I get to see a new country, the country where everyone wants to be.
My alter ego: It’s just a place like any other place. You have already been to a different country and seen places. Nothing new here.
Me: Okay.
I am not half as excited as I was while travelling to UK. I want an aisle seat now, so it’s easy to move around. I am bored of the airhostess explaining the same old stuff about seat belts, oxygen masks etc. I start a conversation with the white lady sitting next to me. The lights from downtown seem like a glare and I think about how much electricity is wasted. I look at the sprawling huge buildings and whine thinking it as a concrete jungle. I do not want to hoard my wardrobe with shopping stuff. I am reluctant to go out and see places. But I do go considering the long weekend without anything else to do. I now have a Powershot 8 MP camera. I take a snap or 2 of nature around me, just because I went on the trip.
Today: I am really surprised at myself. Is it the same me? Or is it 2 different people? No, I do not have any prejudices against any country, nor do I have a financial crunch or any other problem. The situation and my state of mind are the same. After a serious analysis, I concluded that I have this “Been There Done That” syndrome which lazed me enough not to enjoy my stay in the US. Now that I have figured it out, I am all set to embark on a new journey in the US. Boy, am I glad.
An afterthought: Was just wondering – what happens if all parents have this syndrome. Imagine the plight of the 2nd child. I will leave the thoughts to you J.

Multimedia Menace?

Picture this.
The final ODI match between India and Srilanka is ON. Raju wants to get back home from work as soon as possible and watch at least the final 10 overs of the match. As usual, his bus is stuck in Bangalore’s traffic. His Cell phone network is not within reach. So, he is unable to get the live score as SMS. He puts on his Pocket Radio for live commentary. Oh no. India is chasing a target of 246 and is 180/6 with 8 overs to spare. Raju gets more impatient. Luckily for him, the traffic seems to move and lo and behold, he is at home for the last 3 overs. He happily watches India winning the match on Television with a ball to spare. Raju finishes his dinner, powers his laptop and starts searching the Internet for YouTube videos of the cricket match. Watches his favorite stars in action and logs on to cricket Websites for more info on the match. Not completely satisfied, he opens the latest online E-newspapers and reads through some of them. Finally, feeling tired, he dozes off. Eagerly gets up the next morning and looks at the day’s Newspaper that was just delivered.
Whew, look at the number of sources of info we have. Wait a minute – I am not even considering Google or Yahoo or Windows Live search here. I am also not considering the various TV News channels that portray each and every bit of news as “Flash News”. The sheer amount of information available to people today is in itself crazy.
Gone are the days when students relied on teachers for learning. When I was doing my Engineering, I was happy reading through prescribed textbooks and reference books and didn’t have to bother about checking through multiple websites.
Gone are the days where people listened to the transistor for cricket commentary. I was very happy watching only Doordarshan when it was the only channel. The number of channels available today confuse me.
Information overload is now the order of the day. Multimedia has now become a Monster, an unmanageable monster that will slowly transform into a menace.
Hail Multimedia!
